‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’ (A prayer everyone can pray!)
Such are the words of the sinful tax collector in Our Lord’s parable from last week’s Gospel. He is shown mercy by God because he recognizes his sinfulness; his need for forgiveness. A humble person recognizes his weaknesses and need for mercy. As a result he can love. Only the humble can love. Pride does not block his ability to see the needs of others and give of himself.
The ‘holy’ Pharisee did not recognize his pride. He does not ask forgiveness. As a result, he is unable to love; to see the needs of others; to give of himself.
How many struggle with the same disease as the Pharisee – blinded by their pride! They would hold themselves up as moral guardians of truth. But, they don’t believe in absolute Truth. They define morality and truth as suits them! Such is the case when we are told that we are intolerant, unloving and hateful – according to some in our schools, media, entertainment and politics - for firmly teaching marriage is between a man and a woman; Or, gender and sex are the same and given by God at conception; Or, an unborn baby – regardless of ‘deformities’ – is an innocent person and it is murder to kill that child; Or, that religious liberty means I can believe and act in accord with God’s Truth as given by Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit to the Catholic Church.
Yes, all of us are sinners. Just because we are sinners does not mean we cannot stand for and teach the Truth that sets free! Isn’t this love: to teach the truth of life, of the human person, of marriage? Yet, the Catholic Church has suffered throughout history at the hands of those who would attempt to silence Her and Her teachings of love – just read the biography of St. John Paul II. Why? Because the Church teaches Absolute Truth, a Person, Jesus Christ, Who Is Love Itself.
In the United States, we have a unique opportunity as we vote to elect our leaders. Who best resembles and stands for Truth? True morality as given to us by Jesus and His Church and found in Natural Law essentially includes: life is sacred and abortion and euthanasia are evil always; marriage is always between a man and a woman; gender – sexuality – is God-given and the same and not open to discussion. These are non-negotiable issues that have priority over all other issues. A candidate for public office MUST hold and stand for these truths if he or she wants to receive my vote. If he does not hold these truths, the candidate is asking me to vote for him and turn my back on Jesus and His Truth. Difficult decision?

‘O Dios, ten piedad de mi un pecador’ (¡Una oración que todos podemos hacer!)
¡Tales deberían ser las palabras de todos nosotros! El cobrador de impuestos reconoce sus pecados; su necesidad del perdón. Una persona humilde reconoce sus debilidades y su necesidad de la misericordia. Como resultado, esa persona puede amar. El orgullo no bloquea su habilidad de ver las necesidades de otros y dar de él mismo.
El fariseo ‘santo’ no reconoce su orgullo. Él no le pide perdón a Dios; ni su misericordia. Como resultado, él no es capaz de amar; de entregarse a sí mismo.
¡Cuántos luchan con la misma enfermedad del fariseo – cegados por su orgullo! Ellos se mantienen como guardianes morales de la verdad. Pero, no creen en la Verdad absoluta. ¡Ellos definen la moral y la verdad como mejor les conviene! Por ejemplo, cuando se nos dice que somos intolerantes, desamorados, y que estamos llenos de odio – de acuerdo a algunos en nuestras escuelas, medios de comunicación y a políticos – por enseñar firmemente que el matrimonio es entre un hombre y una mujer; o, que el género y el sexo de una persona son lo mismo y son dados por Dios al momento de la concepción; o que un bebé no nacido – sin importar sus deformaciones – es una persona inocente y matar a tal niño es un asesinato; o que la libertad religiosa significa que yo puedo creer y actuar de acuerdo a la Verdad de Dios así como nos fue dada por Jesucristo y el Espíritu Santo a la Iglesia Católica.
Sí, todos nosotros somos pecadores. Sólo porque somos pecadores no significa que no podemos enseñar y levantarnos y por la Verdad que nos hace libres; ¿No es esto amor?: Enseñar la verdad de la vida, de la persona humana, del matrimonio. Sin embargo, la Iglesia Católica ha sufrido a través de la historia a manos de aquellos que han atentado silenciarla y a sus enseñanzas de amor – sólo lean la biografía de Juan Pablo II. ¿Por qué? Porque la Iglesia enseña la Verdad Absoluta, una Persona, Jesucristo, quien es Amor mismo.
En los Estados Unidos, tenemos una oportunidad única mientras votamos para elegir a nuestros líderes. ¿Quién refleja y defiende la Verdad? La verdadera moralidad que nos fue dada por Jesús y Su Iglesia y la encontramos en la Ley Natural, que esencialmente incluye: la vida es sagrada y el aborto y la eutanasia son malvadas siempre; el matrimonio es siempre entre un hombre y una mujer; el género – la sexualidad – es dada por Dios y este no está abierto a discusión. Estos son asuntos no negociables que deben tener prioridad por encima de todos los demás asuntos. Un candidato a un cargo público DEBE tener y pararse por estas verdades si él o ella quiere recibir mis votos. Si él/ella no sostiene éstas verdades, el candidato está pidiéndome que vote por él/ella y que le dé la espalda a Jesús y Su Verdad. ¿Difícil decisión?
