March 19th is the Solemnity of St. Joseph.
Who is this incredible man that the Son of God chose to be His foster father on earth? Who is this silent man that the Scriptures fail to recount even one of his words? Who is this strong, confident man who is content to stand in the shadows of Jesus and the Virgin Mary? Joseph is the poor carpenter who, after Mary, was closer to Jesus than any other person on earth. Next to Mary, no one has received such a unique mission as did Joseph. No one has loved Jesus more. No one has given Jesus more attention. No other person has been so intimate with the Son of God. As St. Bernardine of Siena has said in Homily 1 on St. Joseph, Joseph is called ‘foster father’ but words cannot express the intimate and mysterious relationship which he actually enjoyed with the Son of God. In normal circumstances a man becomes a foster father by accident. In the case of Joseph, however, his is not accidental relationship. Joseph was created so as to live out this transcendent responsibility. This was his predestination, the purpose of all the graces which he received.
The life with Jesus is precisely the mystery in which Joseph of Nazareth ‘shared’ like no other human being except Mary, the Mother of the Incarnate Word. He shared in it with her; he was involved in the same salvific event; he was the guardian of the same love, through the power of which the eternal Father ‘destined us to be his sons through Jesus Christ’ (Ephesians 1:5). (Pope John Paul II, Guardian of the Redeemer, August 15, 1989, 19) A recent Spanish writer has said about St. Joseph’ relationship with Jesus and Mary, He loved Christ. He lived with Christ. He listened to Him. He touched Him. He was continually at the supernatural fountain of grace, enriching his interior life. He also participated in the spiritual fullness of the Blessed Virgin Mary in their married life. Surely Mary did not deprive her spouse of the benefits deriving from her perfection. Mary led a most grace-filled life in the presence of Christ and the angels. The only person she would have been able to communicate these blessings to would have been St. Joseph. It was in this fashion that Mary fulfilled the precept of the Lord that the two partners in marriage should become one flesh.
St. Josemaria Escriva states, Love St. Joseph a lot. Love him with all our soul, because he, together with Jesus, is the person who has most loved our Blessed Lady and has been closest to God. He is the person who has most loved God, after our Mother. He deserves your affection, and it will do you good to get to know him, because he is the Master of the interior life, and has great power before the Lord and before the Mother of God.

¿Quién es este hombre increíble a quien el Hijo de Dios escogió para que fuera su papá sustituto en la Tierra? ¿Quién es este hombre silencioso que las Escrituras fallan en contar siquiera una de sus palabras? ¿Quién es este hombre fuerte y seguro de sí mismo que es feliz estando a la sombra de Jesús y de la Virgen María? José es el carpintero pobre que, después de María, estuvo más cerca de Jesús que ninguna otra persona en la Tierra. A la par de María, nadie ha recibido una misión tan única como la de José. Nadie ha amado más a Jesús. Nadie le ha dado más atención a Jesús. Ninguna otra persona ha estado tan íntimamente con el Hijo de Dios. Como dijo San Bernardino de Siena en su Homilía 1 acerca de San José: José es llamado ‘padre sustituto’ pero las palabras no pueden expresar la íntima y misteriosa relación que en realidad él disfruto con el Hijo de Dios. En circunstancias normales, un hombre se convierte en papá sustituto por accidente. En el caso de José, sin embargo, la de él no fue una relación accidental. José fue creado para vivir esta responsabilidad trascendental. Esta fue su predestinación, el propósito de todas las gracias que el recibió.
La vida de Jesús es precisamente el misterio en el cual José de Nazaret ‘compartió’ como ningún otro ser humano, excepto María, la Madre del Verbo Encarnado. Él compartió con ella; él estuvo involucrado en el mismo evento salvífico; él fue el guardián del mismo amor, a través del poder que el Padre Eterno ‘nos destinó para ser sus hijos a través de Jesucristo’ (Efesios 1:50. (Papa Juan Pablo II, Guardián del Redentor, 15 de Agosto de 1989, 19). Un reciente escritor español ha dicho de la relación de José con Jesús y María, Él amó a Cristo. Él vivió con Cristo. Él lo escuchó. Él lo tocó. Él estuvo continuamente con la fuente supernatural de gracia, enriqueciendo su vida interior. Él también participó en la plenitud espiritual de la Santísima Virgen María durante su vida marital. Con seguridad María no deprivó a su esposo de los beneficios derivados de su perfección. María llevó la vida más llena de gracia en la presencia de Cristo y los ángeles. La única persona con la que pudo comunicar estas bendiciones debe haber sido San José. Fue de esta forma que María cumplió con el precepto del Señor que dice que las dos personas en un matrimonio se convierten en una carne.
Sn. Josemaría Escrivá declara, Amen mucho a San José. Ámenlo con toda su alma, porque él, junto a Jesús, es la persona que más ha amado a la Santísima Señora y ha estado más cerca de Dios. Él es la persona que más ha amado a Dios, después de su Madre. Él merece su afecto, y les hará bien conocerlo, porque él es el Maestro de la vida interior, y tiene gran poder ante Dios y ante la Madre de Dios.
