Our Lady of Guadalupe

OLGuaadalupeExplained-Eng-1

The 1500s were a cataclysmic century for Catholicism in Europe.

About 1520 the splintering of Christendom would begin, led by a disgruntled Augustinian monk named Martin Luther – he would found Lutheranism. He would be followed by John Calvin in Switzerland who founded the Reformed churches. John Knox would follow him in Scotland with Presbyterianism. King Henry VIII would make himself the head of the Church in England in 1532, establishing the Anglican religion – Episcopalian in America.

Yet, God’s Providence is not dictated by human beings. While many were leaving the Faith in the Old World, many were joining the Catholic Faith in the New World.

1521 saw the victory of Cortes over the Aztec Empire – against odds of 10,000:1. His victory would all but end the practice of human sacrifice in modern-day Mexico. (Modern-day Mexico City saw 80,000 sacrificed to pagan gods of darkness in just four days in 1487!)

God would use the entry of the Spanish to bring about millions of conversions in ten years. By 1541 there were Nine Million conversions to Catholicism amongst the native population! Why?

The direct intervention of the Mother of God. Jesus sent His Mother to visit (St.) Juan Diego at the Tepeyac Hill in modern-day Mexico City. She would appear to him four times and once to his uncle from December 9 – 12. In the final apparition, Our Lady, who spoke the local dialect of Juan Diego, gave Juan Diego beautiful roses that he was to take to the Bishop. When Juan Diego unfurled his tilma, the roses fell to the floor before the Bishop. What was left on the tilma was an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she had appeared to Juan Diego and his uncle.

The image was prominently displayed for all to visit. The Franciscan friars explained the image of Our Lady to the people. She stands in front of and on top of symbols of their two ‘great’ pagan gods. She is greater than they. Yet, she is not a goddess. She has her hands folded in prayer to the one true God. The true God sent His Son to become man, Die on the Cross, Rise from the dead and Ascend into heaven. He has sacrificed Himself so that we do not sacrifice each other.

This Son of God was born of this Woman on the tilma. She is pregnant in the tilma. She is His Mother and His Queen. She is also our Mother and our Queen. She will protect us and lead us to Her Son!

Such is Our Lady of Guadalupe whose feast day is December 12th.

God bless
