July 25, 1968 St. Paul VI released his landmark encyclical, Humanae Vitae – Of Human Life. It is a short must-read for every engaged/married couple. The Pope teaches of the four qualities of marriage: fully human, total, faithful and exclusive until death and fruitful (‘fecund’). St. Paul VI re-iterates the constant teaching of the Church on the openness to life in marriage and family. At a time when every mainstream Christian denomination compromised on Artificial Birth Control (ABC), the Catholic Church – and the Pope – exercising Her infallibility on matters of faith and morals, remained consistent.
The Holy Father recognizes that there may be serious reasons in marriage that allow for avoidance of pregnancy: namely, physical, economic, psychological and social. (I honestly have not heard of a ‘good’ serious social reason in the United States.) Realizing that there may be a serious reason to avoid pregnancy the Pope reminds us that each and every marriage act must remain open to the transmission of life. (n. 11) He goes on to explain the two inseparable aspects/purposes of marriage and the marital act: union and procreation. (n. 12) “To use this divine gift (marital union) destroying, even if only partially, its meaning and its purpose is to contradict the nature both of man and of woman and of their most intimate relationship, and therefore it is to contradict also the plan of God and His will.” (n. 13) (Pope John Paul II in his writings also explains that marital union is a re-commitment of one’s total self-gift made in one’s vows. To divide, or limit one’s fertility is to divide or limit one’s total self-gift.
Paragraph 14 is the portion of this document that many rebelled against – and still do. Can I just quote the words of the Holy Father?
In conformity with these landmarks in the human and Christian vision of marriage, we must once again declare that the direct interruption of the generative process already begun, and, above all, directly willed and procured abortion, even if for therapeutic reasons, are to be absolutely excluded as licit means of regulating birth.
Equally to be excluded, as the teaching authority of the Church has frequently declared, is direct sterilization, whether perpetual or temporary, whether of the man or of the woman. Similarly excluded is every action which, either in anticipation of the conjugal act, or in its accomplishment, or, in the development of its natural consequences, proposes, whether as an end or as a means, to render procreation impossible.
The Holy Father later explains that it is never permitted to do evil so that good may follow therefrom – as often individuals claim when using artificial birth control.
Some may say that the Pope left no choice for couples who experience serious physical, economic, psychological and social situations. This would be incorrect. We will discuss next week the beautiful and marriage strengthening options

El Papa enseña las cuatro cualidades del matrimonio: completamente humano, total, fiel y exclusivo hasta la muerte y fructífero (‘fecundo’). San Pablo VI reitera la enseñanza constante de la Iglesia en cuanto a la apertura a la vida en el matrimonio y la familia. En el tiempo en que toda denominación cristiana cedió ante Control de Natalidad Artificial, la Iglesia Católica – y el Papa – ejercieron su infabilidad en asuntos de Fé y Moral, manteniéndose constantes.
El Santo Padre reconoce que pueden haber razones serias en el matrimonio que permiten evitar el embarazo: físicas, económicas, psicológicas y sociales. (Honestamente, yo no he escuchado de una ‘buena’ seria razón social en los Estados Unidos). Dándose cuenta que puede haber una razón seria para evitar el embarazo el Papa nos recuerda que cada uno y todo acto marital siempre debe estar abierto a la transmisión de vida. (n.11) El continúa explicando los dos aspectos/propósitos del acto marital: unión y procreación. (n.12) “Usar este don divino (la unión marital) destruyendo, aún si solo es parcialmente, su significado y propósito es contradecir ambas naturalezas del hombre y de la mujer y de su más íntima relación, y por lo tanto, es contradecir también el plan de Dios y Su voluntad”. (n.13) (El Papa Juan Pablo II en sus escritos también explica que la unión marital es –re-comprometerse a la entrega total de cada uno que hicieron en sus votos matrimoniales. Dividir o limitar la fertilidad de uno es dividir o limitar la entrega total de uno mismo).
El párrafo 14 es la porción de este documento contra el que muchos se rebelaron – y todavía lo hacen. ¿Puedo citar las palabras del Santo Padre?
En conformidad con estos puntos de referencia de la visión humana y cristiana del matrimonio, debemos una vez más declarar que la interrupción directa del proceso generativa que ya ha comenzado, y, sobre todo, directamente desear y procurar un aborto, aun si es por razones terapéuticas, está absolutamente excluido como un medio lícito para regular la natalidad.
Igualmente debe ser excluido, como lo indica la enseñanza autoritativa de la Iglesia y lo ha declarado frecuentemente, la esterilización, así sea perpetua o temporal, en el hombre como en la mujer. Similarmente es excluida cualquier acción en la cual, ya sea en anticipación del acto conyugal, o en su realización, o, en el desarrollo de sus consecuencias naturales, propone, ya sea como el fin o el medio, de rendir imposible la procreación.
El Santo Padre explica más tarde que nunca es permitido hacer un mal para que un bien salga de allí – como muchos de los que usan anticonceptivos claman.
Puede que algunos digan que el Papa no deja opción para las parejas que experimentan serias situaciones físicas, económicas, psicológicas y sociales. Esto es incorrecto. La próxima semana vamos a discutir las hermosas opciones para fortalecer el matrimonio.
