Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. . . The baby shall play by the cobra’s den, and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair. . . . (Isaiah 11:1-10)
The coming of the Messiah into the world will bring peace. The angels say as much at His Birth, Glory to God in the highest and peace to His people on earth. The Birth of Jesus Christ gives us a view of the two basic ideas of peace: one true, one false.
In three weeks we will see peace in the manger scene. It is true peace between God and man because God has become man to redeem man’s offense against God. We will see a few souls who knew peace as the gift of God; the union of each person with his God. We will see Mary and Joseph, a few shepherds, and the wise men at peace with God and therefore, at peace with their fellow man.
We will also see the attempt at peace without Jesus, without God. Herod attempts to have his own ‘peace’ without Jesus. In order to do so he has to enforce his will upon others, even to their deaths. It is a very different mindset than Blessed Mother who says, ‘Thy will be done.’ False peace, man-made peace is nothing of the sort and sooner or later is the one (perhaps with others) dictating to the many what is good for them. In such a case, ‘peace’ is not a harmony of persons in a society rooted first in each person’s harmony with God. God is nowhere in the picture. How can there be harmony of persons when there is no harmony with Peace Itself?
True peace is each person’s use of his/her free will according to God’s all-good will. It is union in one’s soul with one’s God. Peace with one’s God leads to one desiring and acting for what is best for one’s neighbor – love. It is God who guides mankind as what is best for each person; He is love. Hence, a truly civilized society (even world) will be at peace when it follows God’s guidance as found in Natural Law written on every man’s heart, i.e. the Creator of the world ought to be worshiped; each person should be respected; therefore, murder and dishonesty are wrong. In addition, a society will be at peace when each individual follows God’s guidance as given in His Revelation, particularly the Ten Commandments, and the Law of Love and Forgiveness.
The more individuals within a society are unified with Jesus/God, the deeper and stronger will be the peace in society. The fewer individuals within a society are unified with Jesus/God, the more shallow and tenuous will be the peace in society. It is sin that separates a person from God, from peace with Him and with one’s neighbor. If sin is enshrined in society, peace will whither. If virtue is enshrined in society, peace will flourish.
May our Advent preparation for Christmas, particularly reception of the sacrament of Penance, foster virtue, root out sin and bring about true peace in our society!

La venida del Mesías al mundo traerá paz. Los ángeles dicen en Su Nacimiento tanto como, Gloria a Dios en el Cielo y paz a los hombres en la tierra. El nacimiento de Jesucristo nos da un vistazo a las dos ideas básicas de la paz: una verdadera, una falsa.
En tres semanas vamos a ver paz en la escena del pesebre. Es verdadera paz entre Dios y el hombre, porque Dios se volvió hombre para redimir las ofensas del hombre en contra de Dios. Nosotros veremos unas pocas almas que conocían la paz como un regalo de Dios; la unión de cada persona con Dios. Veremos a María y a José, unos pocos pastores y los tres reyes magos, en paz con Dios y por lo tanto, en paz con sus semejantes.
También veremos un intento de paz sin Jesús, sin Dios. Herodes trata de tener su propia ‘paz’ sin Jesús. Para poder hacerlo, él tiene que ejercer su voluntad en otros, aun hasta su muerte. Es una mentalidad muy diferente a la de la Santísima Madre quien dice, ‘hágase tu voluntad’. La paz falsa, paz hecha por el hombre, no es del mismo tipo y tarde o temprano es la que (a lo mejor con otras) estará dictando a la multitud lo que es bueno para ellos. En tal caso, ‘la paz’ no es una armonía de personas en una sociedad arraigada primero, en cada persona en armonía con Dios. Dios no está en ningún lugar de la foto. ¿Cómo puede haber armonía de personas cuando no hay armonía con la paz misma?
La paz verdadera es el uso del libre albedrío de cada persona, de acuerdo con la voluntad de Dios. Es la unión del alma de uno con el Dios de uno. La paz, con el Dios de uno, lo lleva a uno a desear y actuar por lo que es lo mejor para uno y para el prójimo – amor. Es Dios quien guía a la humanidad a lo que es lo mejor para cada persona; Él es amor. Por lo tanto, una sociedad verdaderamente civilizada (aún el mundo) va a estar en paz cuando siga la dirección de Dios, como se puede encontrar en la Ley Natural escrita en cada corazón del hombre, por ej. El Creador del mundo debe de ser adorado; cada persona debe de ser respetada; por lo tanto el asesinato y la deshonestidad están equivocadas. Además, una sociedad estará en paz cuando cada individuo siga la dirección de Dios como se ha dado en Su Revelación, particularmente los Diez Mandamientos, y la Ley de Amor y el Perdón.
Entre más individuos en una sociedad estén unificados con Jesús/Dios, más profunda y fuerte será la paz en la sociedad. Entre menos individuos dentro de una sociedad estén unificados con Jesús/Dios, más superficial y tenue será la paz en una sociedad. Es el pecado lo que separa a una persona de Dios, de la paz con Él y con el prójimo. Si el pecado es consagrado en una sociedad, la paz se marchitará. Si la virtud es consagrada en la sociedad, la paz florecerá.
¡Que nuestra preparación de Adviento para la Navidad, particularmente la recepción del sacramento de la Penitencia, fomente virtud, erradique el pecado y traiga verdadera paz en nuestra sociedad!
