Today, we celebrate the dedication of St. John Lateran Basilica in Rome. One may ask that we celebrate saints’ feasts, but why the dedication of a church in Rome? St. John Lateran is considered omnium ecclesiarum Urbis et Orbis mater et caput OR mother and head of all churches of Rome and the world. This cathedral is THE cathedral for the bishop of Rome, the Pope. We often think of St. Peter’s as THE Pope’s church, but it isn’t. The popes have lived at the Vatican since the early 1400s. After the legalization of Christianity in 313 by Constantine, the popes lived at the Lateran Palace adjacent to St. John Lateran Basilica.
Constantine built St. John Lateran for the popes. It was built in honor of St. John the Baptist on land donated by the Laterani family. As you can guess, there is no Saint John Lateran! Because the Pope is the head on earth of the Catholic Church, his cathedral is rightfully called the mother and head of all churches of Rome and the world. In addition, the Romans do not accept the new pope as their bishop until he is installed/received at St. John Lateran!
The basilica of St. John Lateran contains the jaw bones of Peter and Paul above the high altar. It also has the table/altar of the Christian Senator Pudens. Peter offered Mass on this table before his death in 67 AD.
On this feast of the Pope’s cathedral may we again re-affirm our fidelity and love for our Holy Father and Bishop of Rome who is Our Lord’s Vicar on earth and holds keys of the kingdom.

Hoy, celebramos la dedicación de la Basílica de San Juan Laterano en Roma. Uno se preguntará que celebramos las fiestas de los santos pero, ¿por qué la dedicación de una iglesia en Roma? San Juan Laterano es considerada omnium ecclesiarum Urbis et Orbis mater et caput O madre y cabeza de todas las iglesias de Roma y del mundo. Esta catedral es LA catedral del Obispo de Roma, el Papa. A menudo pensamos en la Basílica de San Pedro como LA iglesia del Papa, pero no lo es. Los Papas han vivido en el Vaticano desde principios de los 1400. Después de la legalización de la cristiandad en el año 313 por Constantino, los Papas han vivido en el Palacio Laterano, adyacente a la Basílica de San Juan Laterano.
Constantino construyó San Juan Laterano para los Papas. Fue construida en tierra donada por la familia Laterani en honor a San Juan Bautista. Como se pueden imaginar, ¡no hay un San Juan Laterano! Porque el Papa es la cabeza de la Iglesia Católica en la tierra, su catedral es llamada, con justicia, la madre y cabeza de todas las iglesias de Roma y del mundo. Además, los romanos no aceptan al nuevo Papa como su obispo ¡hasta que él ha sido instalado /recibido en San Juan Laterano!
La Basílica de San Juan Laterano contiene los huesos de las mandíbulas de los santos Pedro y Pablo en el altar mayor. También tiene la mesa/altar del Senador cristiano Pudens, Pedro ofreció Misa en esta mesa antes de su muerte en el año 67 D.C.
Que en esta fiesta de la catedral del Papa reafirmemos nuevamente nuestra fidelidad y amor por nuestro Santo Padre y Obispo de Roma quien es el Vicario de Nuestro Señor en la tierra y quien tiene las llaves del reino.
