The week before last I was on retreat with a number of other priests from around the northeast. During meals we listened to a book on tape about a recently Beatified Bishop. His name was Bishop Alvaro del Portillo. Have you ever heard of him?
I did not know much about him before the retreat. He was an incredible layman, priest and bishop in Spain from the 1930s until his death in 1995.
As a layman he was one of the first men to join a young Spanish priest, Fr. Josemaria Escriva, in an endeavor called, ‘Opus Dei.’ As a layman he strived to get to daily Mass, spend time in prayer both in the morning and evening, make works of sacrifice – not eating in between meals, suffering illnesses joyfully, etc. He was a civil engineer which was a prestigious position in Spain in the 1930s. However, he sacrificed it to give himself totally to the Work of God with St. Josemaria Escriva.
More than once during the Spanish Civil War he escaped death. If you recall people were killed for being Catholic and pious by the communists in Madrid. Once in prison a guard put his pistol to his head. Yet, his calm demeanor often helped him to work his way out of trouble.
He was the right hand man St. Josemaria Escriva. He often had illnesses and headaches from his duties with building projects, interactions with the Roman Curia, etc. In all of it, his pleasant and humble personality removed objections from bishops and priests who worked in the Vatican. He was content to work in the background for St. Josemaria Escriva. Yet, he was placed as head of the organization’s college in Rome when it began; in charge of the daily running of Opus Dei; as well as working with and in the Vatican.
Opus Dei is a personal prelature of the Church which means that it answers directly to the Holy Father. It is comprised of married individuals, single lay men and women and priests. Often in the formation of a religious entity in the Church – though Opus Dei is not a religious order – the founder may be canonized: i.e. Mother Teresa, Mother Katherine Drexel, Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini to name a few. At times a successor to the founder may be found to be holy and heroic – St. Francis Borgia to St. Ignatius of Loyola. In the case of Opus Dei the founder and his successor are both amongst the blessed in heaven.

La semana antes de la pasada, yo estaba en un retiro con un número de otros sacerdotes del área del noreste. Durante las comidas escuchábamos la narración de un libro en CD, acerca del Obispo recientemente beatificado. Su nombre era Obispo Álvaro del Portillo. ¿Alguna vez han escuchado acerca de él?
Yo no sabía mucho de él antes del retiro. Él fue un increíble hombre laico, sacerdote y Obispo en España de principios de los años 1930 hasta su muerte en 1995.
Como hombre laico él fue uno de los primeros hombres en unirse al joven sacerdote español Padre Josemaría Escrivá, para su embarque llamado ‘Opus Dei’. Como laico, él se esforzó por asistir a Misa diaria, a pasar tiempo en oración en la mañana y en la tarde, hacer sacrificios – no comer entre comidas, sufrir enfermedades alegremente, etc. Él era un ingeniero civil la cual era una posición prestigiosa en España en 1930. Sin embargo, él lo sacrifico para entregarse totalmente a la Obra de Dios con San Josemaría Escrivá.
Más de una vez durante la Guerra Civil Española él se le escapó a la muerte. Si ustedes se recuerdan, los comunistas en Madrid asesinaban a la gente por ser católica y piadosa. Una vez, en prisión, un guardia le puso una pistola en la cabeza. Pero, su conducta calmada muchas veces lo ayudo encontrar el camino para salirse del problema.
Él era la mano derecha de San Josemaría Escrivá. A menudo tenía enfermedades y dolores de cabeza debido a sus responsabilidades con los proyectos de construcción, interacciones con la Curia romana, etc. En todo eso, su agradable y humilde personalidad removía objeciones de los Obispos y sacerdotes que trabajaban en el Vaticano. Él estaba contento trabajando detrás del escenario para San Josemaría Escrivá. Aun así, él fue puesto como cabeza del colegio de la organización en Roma cuando comenzó; a cargo del funcionamiento diario del Opus Dei; así como trabajó con y en el Vaticano.
Opus Dei es una prelatura de la Iglesia, lo cual significa que le responde directamente al Santo Padre. Está compuesto por individuos casados, hombres y mujeres laicos solteros y sacerdotes. A menudo, en la formación de una orden religiosa en la Iglesia – aunque Opus Dei no es una orden religiosa – el fundador puede ser canonizado: ej. Madre Teresa, Madre Katherine Drexel, Madre Francis Javier Cabrini, por nombrar algunos. A veces el sucesor del fundador puede ser encontrado santo y heroico – San Francisco Borgia a San Ignacio de Loyola. En el caso del Opus Dei, el fundador y su sucesor están ambos entre los santos en el Cielo.
